EPOXY FLOORING

Epoxy is a resin based compound made up of two or three components, depending on the application. Coatings come in a variety of options including self-levelling compounds, roll on and epoxy screed – all of which provide a seamless and totally impermeable surface. Epoxy also allows seamless coving between walls and floors, which enables even greater protection from the possibility of food contamination from an accumulation of bacteria, mould, dirt and dust.

REASONS FOR INSTALLING EPOXY FLOORING IN INDUSTRIES

There are several reasons for installing epoxy flooring services and they are :

  • Slip-resistant floor                                                                                          Epoxy flooring in library
  • Skid-resistant floor
  • Oil – resistant floor
  • Water – resistant floor
  • Micro-organism free floor
  • Suitable for wet environments
  • Heat resistant
  • Chemical resistant
  • Can adhere to wood, metal, glass, stone and some plastics.

The primary areas for application of epoxy resins in construction projects are coatings, flooring, concrete restoration, crack repair, and as joint material for tiles.

ADAVANTAGES OF EPOXY FLOORING

Epoxy flooring service provides the following advantages,

  • Less Wear and Tear Floor
  • Improved abrasion resistance Floor
  • Dust free floor
  • Insect Free Floor
  • Hygiene Floor
  • Joint free seamless floor
  • Aesthetic Floor
  • Water & Oil Resistance Floor
  • Cold room floor
  • ESD Floor
  • Easy cleaning
  • Floor renovations can be done in short time

PU FLOORING

PU floorings are very well suited to industrial facilities (for almost all industries). The nature of PU flooring is that they can survive the abuses of industrial operations for a very long period of time.

Polyurethane (PU Flooring) screeds, are a popular choice for clients within the food industry.

Polyurethane flooring, also known as PU flooring, is used in both commercial and domestic environments. PU Floors are most commonly found in residential environments, whereas PU screeds are solely for industrial or factory flooring.

Polyurethane flooring has a good degree of flexibility, meanings it’s much less brittle in comparison to epoxy flooring solutions, yet still has extremely durable properties.

REASONS FOR INSTALLING PU FLOORING IN INDUSTRIES

There are several reasons for installing PU flooring services and they are :

  • Slip Resistance                                                                                            PU Flooring
  • Chemical Resistance
  • Wear Resistance
  • Flexibility
  • Durability
  • Abrasion & Scratch Resistance
  • Quick Application
  • Fast Curing & Low Downtime.

ADVANTAGES OF PU FLOORING

  • Can achieve a mat finish – great for that top end look
  • Is more elastic, giving it a softer, bouncier feel and better resistance to surface scratching
  • Also offers better resistance to extremes of temperatures e.g. freezers and cold rooms
  • Good for waterproofing
  • Better resistance to food contaminants such as lactic acids – ideal for dairies and also commercial kitchens
  • Offers a good base for anti-slip surfaces
  • Has a much shorter curing time than epoxy, important if you just can’t spare the down time in your facility.

 EPOXY FLOORING Vs PU FLOORING

EPOXY FLOORING PU FLOORING
Epoxy flooring in general is harder PU flooring in general is more flexible
When comparing PU flooring versus Epoxy flooring, epoxy is sensitive to moisture but not as much as PU flooring materials. PU coatings and self-levelling materials are also much more sensitive to moisture presence.
Cost is less when compared to PU flooring. Cost is high when compared to epoxy flooring.

Long cure time until fully hardened (around a week)

Less cure time when compared to epoxy flooring.
Prone to yellowing when exposed to UV in sunlight, which can affect end appearance.

Prone to gouging, not as resistant to heavy industry traffic as epoxy surfaces.

In general, Polyurethane flooring materials cure faster than epoxy resin flooring materials so if a project needs to be handed over in a short amount of time, Polyurethane flooring is a good consideration. However, applying Polyrethane flooring materials require experienced applicators due to their faster pot life which is why it is advisable to hire a professional.
PU flooring price is slightly more expensive in general. But it is important to understand that PU flooring price is not always the only factor and more thought should be put into considering the right kind of material for the facility and intended purpose. When it comes to life PU flooring price is much cheaper than epoxy flooring.

Some epoxy coatings are heat resistant to temperatures up to 65°C, whereas polyurethane systems are available that can tolerate 120°C.

Each flooring system has differing properties suited to particular uses and choosing the wrong solution can result in costly repairs or even complete floor failure down the line.

While both are called resins, epoxy coatings and polyurethane  floors should not be considered the same thing. Admittedly they do share similarities, such as being two-component systems (a resin and a hardener) that when brought together undergo a process of stoichiometric curing to form a solid layer.

In both cases this results in a seamless, impervious coating that can be applied quickly in large quantities, but they are two very different types of materials with specific characteristics and uses.

The main difference between epoxy coatings and polyurethane materials is in the molecular structure, which affects how it fuses together during the curing process.

There are multiple types of components that can be used and that will vary the end result slightly, but essentially Polyurethanes have a higher cross-linked density than epoxies, making them the harder wearing of the two.
